DISCOVERY VIDEO

World's Largest Flower Mystery Solved

The world's largest flower, called Rafflesia, can have a diameter up to one meter and can weigh up to 10 kilograms. It also smells like rotting flesh. Discovery News tells us that its genetic roots have been uncovered and that this plant that smells so bad is related to delicate flowers such as poinsettias or violets.

The flower, which is one of 20 species collectively called Rafflesia, is related to poinsettias, violets, passionflowers, and other members of the order Malpighiales, according to a paper published in the current Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
Researchers also have some intriguing theories as to why Rafflesia smells so awful, why its flowers bloom only once a year and live for five to seven days, why the plant is a parasite, and why it likes to attract flies that normally go for mounds of dead flesh.

Before going further, here is a photo showing a man surrounding a rafflesia (Credit: Bruce Coleman Collection, photo by Allain Compost).

A rafflesia in one man's hands

How did the researchers proceed?

Rafflesia is a parasitic plant that lacks roots, stems, and leaves. Usually botanists trace plant orders using chloroplast DNA, but since Rafflesia does not have chloroplast genes, Todd Barkman, assistant professor of biological sciences at Western Michigan University, and his team instead analyzed the Rafflesia's mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which corresponds to chloroplast DNA.
The mtDNA studies revealed that the large, stinky flower is related to more normal-sized, pleasantly fragrant posies. Despite its enormity, Rafflesia does resemble passionflowers, according to Barkman. Both have their stamens and pistils fused together in a central column, and both produce a corona, or crown, in the shape of a ring.

Here is another photo showing details of this flower (Credit: Todd Barkman).

Details of a rafflesia
Rafflesia did not begin its life as a parasite, but likely evolved this lifestyle in Southeast Asia as it began to depend upon a variety of grape, Tetrastigma. Now Rafflesia lives inside of the grape plant and only reveals itself once a year when it produces the smelly blooms.
"By human standards, the large, lumpy, mottled, stinky flowers could be interpreted as mimicking rotting flesh," Barkman told Discovery News. "The fact that flies are highly attracted to the flowers suggests that they think the flowers look and smell like rotting flesh too!"

For more information about the rafflesia, you can look at this definition on Wikipedia and at this Rafflesia gallery.

Finally, here is the abstract of the paper published by PNAS, "Mitochondrial DNA sequences reveal the photosynthetic relatives of Rafflesia, the worlds largest flower."

All parasites are thought to have evolved from free-living ancestors. However, the ancestral conditions facilitating the shift to parasitism are unclear, particularly in plants because the phylogenetic position of many parasites is unknown. This is especially true for Rafflesia, an endophytic holoparasite that produces the largest flowers in the world and has defied confident phylogenetic placement since its discovery >180 years ago. Here we present results of a phylogenetic analysis of 95 species of seed plants designed to infer the position of Rafflesia in an evolutionary context using the mitochondrial gene matR (1,806 aligned base pairs). Overall, the estimated phylogenetic tree is highly congruent with independent analyses and provides a strongly supported placement of Rafflesia with the order Malpighiales, which includes poinsettias, violets, and passionflowers.

This is Makkah

Honourable Makkah, the Secure City; Allaah has distinguished it from among all places and made it sacred from the day He created the heavens and the earth.

Allaah commanded Prophet Ibraaheem may Allaah exalt his mention to build the first House on earth for Allaah to be worshipped in at this spot and sent down the Black Stone from Paradise as a manifest sign of the sanctity of His Sacred House.

In Makkah springs the finest water on the surface of the earth, the water of Zamzam, which is food that suffices the hungry and a cure for the sick. It is the water with which the chest and heart of the chosen Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was cleansed in order to prepare him for his mission.

Allaah has made Makkah eternally sacred and secure; He says (what means): “Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away (i.e. killed and taken captive) all around them?” [Quran 29:67]

Allaah has sent down blessings and mercy upon Makkah, the likes of which have not been bestowed upon any other place or person on earth.

In order to make the matter clear, lest people confuse what is virtuous with what is not and what is sacred with what is not, the Lord sent down the angel Jibreel (Gabriel) may Allaah exalt his mention to point out the boundaries of the Sacred City, and Prophet Ibraaheem may Allaah exalt his mention placed signs marking its boundaries. Furthermore, Allaah commanded His messenger, Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) to rebuild the structure of the House. This, indeed, is a clear sign and evidence manifesting the sanctity and holiness of this Secure City.

It was with the command of Allaah that Prophet Ibraaheem may Allaah exalt his mention proclaimed to the people the Hajj (pilgrimage) and Allaah took it upon Himself to convey the sound of the call all around the world. Thereafter, the caravan of the honourable prophets, the righteous and those who followed them began to respond and come forth to the Sacred City. Prophet Moosaa (Moses) may Allaah exalt his mention the one who was honoured by the miracle of Allaah speaking to him, came forth, as came Prophet Yoonus (Jonah) may Allaah exalt his mention the one who was swallowed by the whale, as well as a multitude of other prophets.

Makkah is the land where the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was born and where his prophethood commenced. It is where he first received revelation; on the peak of one of its lofty mountains lies the famous Cave Hiraa’ in which the Qur’aan was revealed to him sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

The honouring and sanctity of Makkah continued with the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) conveyed to us that the Ka’bah was to be the direction which the Muslims should face during their prayers, and that a single prayer in the Sacred Mosque was to be equivalent to a hundred thousand in any other mosque.

He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) guided the people to know that shedding blood (i.e., killing) in Makkah is prohibited as is felling trees and hunting, and that picking up lost items from its streets is prohibited, unless certain strict conditions are fulfilled.

The last and final Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) openly announced his love of Makkah and its lofty status in the sight of Allaah when he said, addressing it: “I swear by Allaah! You are the best of the lands of Allaah and you are the most beloved land to Allaah.” [At-Tirmithi & Ahmad]

How could we not glorify Makkah when it is a land that Allaah Almighty has designated and singled out with the qualities of sanctity and of being glorified magnificently? How could we not glorify it when Allaah has made it sacred, magnified the reward of performing good deeds in it, and has made its mention eternal by mentioning it in the Qur’aan? Allaah says: (what means): “That [has been commanded], and whoever honours the sacred ordinances of Allaah — it is best for him in the sight of his Lord” [Quran 22:30]

Allaah also says (what means): “That [is so]. And whoever honours the symbols [i.e. rites] of Allaah - indeed, it is from the piety of hearts” [Quran 22: 32]

The sacred ordinances and symbols (rites) of Allaah refers to the Sacred City, the Sacred House of Allaah, and sacred places within them, and it is due to their special qualities that Allaah has distinguished them from all other cities and lands.

Honouring and glorifying the rites of Allaah is accomplished by respecting this city, by realising its status and virtues, and by continually expressing gratitude upon seeing it, as well as by holding the matter of worshipping Allaah within it in high esteem. This is so because the first House of worship ever to be built was in Makkah, and it is towards it that the hearts of the Muslims are directed from all places on earth. How can worship in it not then have such a high status and value?

Allaah made the reward of performing acts of worship in it multiples of that performed elsewhere and made the reward of a single prayer in the sacred mosque equivalent to a hundred thousand prayers in any other mosque. Additionally, fasting, spending in charity and all other acts of virtue in Makkah have a much higher reward than anywhere else in the world, higher than any other act of worship could reach in value.

Did Jaques Cousteau convert to Islam? Yes!

  • Waqf Ikhlas
  • The Reasons Why They Become Muslims ([1], [2]), volume 16, part 3 of the Waqf Ikhlas series:

    21 June, 1995 Copyleft c Waqf Ikhlas, Istanbul, 1995.

PEOPLE WHO CHOSE ISLAM CAPTAIN (JACQUES) COUSTEAU (French)

[In France Islam has been spreading at a high velocity among people
who have made fame in various areas. The number of people who have
abandoned Christianity and chosen Islam have reached one hundred
thousand already. This score has been confirmed by the Archbishop
of Paris, the highest Catholic rank in France.

It is noteworthy that people who have preferred Islam are not only
from among workers and civil servants but also from among people
    renowned in every respect.

Among people who have chosen Islam is Captain Cousteau, whom the
whole world closely knows for his explorations about life under
    water.

As the groundswell of embracing Islam was spreading among France's
universal celebrities, Captain Cousteau, the world's most eminent
undersea explorer, announced that by accepting Islam he had made
the most correct decision of his life.

Captain Cousteau, who has revealed the secrets of oceans one by
one with the films that he made and which are being televised world
over in a program sub-headed The Living Sea, said that what actually
prompted him to choose the Islamic religion was, after observing
that the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean did not
mix with each other, his seeing that the same phenomenon was written
in the Qur'an al-Karim which had been revealed fourteen hundred years
    before.]

Captain Cousteau told of the event that had caused him to become a
    Muslim, as follows:

"In 1962 German scientists said that the waters of the Red Sea
and the Indian Ocean did not mix with each other in the Strait
of Bab-ul-Mandab where the Aden Bay and the Red Sea join. So we
began to examine whether the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the
Mediterranean mixed with each other. First we analyzed the water
in the Mediterranean to find out its natural salinity and density,
and the life it contained. We repeated the same procedure in the
Atlantic Ocean. The two masses of water had been meeting each
other in the Gibraltar for thousands of years. Accordingly, the
two masses of water must have been mixing with each other and
they must have been sharing identical, or, at least, similar
properties in salinity and density. On the contrary, even at
places where the two seas were closest to each other, each mass
of water preserved its properties. In other words, at the point
where the two seas met, a curtain of water prevented the waters
belonging to the two seas from mixing. When I told Professor
Maurice Bucaille about this phenomenon, he said that it was no
surprise and that it was written clearly in Islam's Holy Book,
the Qur'an al-Karim. Indeed, this fact was defined in a plain
language in the Qur'an al-Karim. When I knew this, I believed in
the fact that the Qur'an al-Karim was the 'Word of Allah'. I chose
Islam, the true religion. The spiritual potency inherent in the
Islamic religion gave me the strength to endure the pain I had
been suffering for the loss of my son."

According to TheStarOnline today, it is believe that Arapaima Gigas fish or locally they called it as Ikan Naga, which can be found at Amazon and Orinoco rivers of South America might exist at Tasik Kenyir. This is due to the misterious incident happened to a bird park supervisor, fell off his boat.

Looks like the Ikan Naga would be famous in Malaysia, thus MAK will categoty it as one of the celebrities. Due to that, MAK have search some of the Ikan Naga image in the internet & below are some of it. Thanks to other webmaster & blogger for sharing the faces of the giant fish.
