Saudi Women Given Right To vote

JEDDAH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia will allow women to stand for election and vote, the king announced on Sunday, in a significant policy shift in the conservative Islamic kingdom.

In a five-minute speech, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud said women will also take part in the next session of the unelected, advisory Shura Council, which vets legislation but has no binding powers.

"Because we refuse to marginalise women in society in all roles that comply with sharia, we have decided, after deliberation with our senior ulama (clerics) and others... to involve women in the Shura Council as members, starting from the next term," he said in a speech delivered to the advisory body.

"Women will be able to run as candidates in the municipal election and will even have a right to vote."

Women's rights are regarded as a litmus test for the government's appetite for social and political reform. Saudi Arabia adheres to a strict version of Islamic law that enforces the segregation of the sexes.

"This is great news," said Wajeha al-Huwaider, a Saudi writer and women's rights activist. "Women's voices will finally be heard.

"Now it is time to remove other barriers like not allowing women to drive cars and not being able to function, to live a normal life without male guardians."

The king did not address the issue of women being allowed to drive. Although there is no written law against women driving, they are not issued licences, effectively banning the practice.

Women in Saudi Arabia must also have written approval from a male guardian -- a father, husband, brother or son -- to leave the country, work or even undergo certain medical operations.

After entering the Shura Council chamber leaning heavily on a cane, King Abdullah, who is thought to be 87 or 88, read only a section of a longer prepared statement that was later released in full by the authorities.

The part he did not read included reference to Saudi foreign policy including the kingdom's continued support for a Gulf-brokered plan for a power transition in Yemen.

SEEKING CHANGE

King Abdullah has long been pushing cautious political reforms, but in a country where conservative clerics and senior members of the ruling family oppose even minor changes, liberalisation has been very gradual.

He built a new university for students of both sexes and encouraged women to participate more in the labour market.

Despite calls on social media for widespread protests in Saudi Arabia during the Arab Spring pro-democracy protests in the Middle East and north Africa, the only noteworthy demonstrations were confined to the country's Eastern Province, which is home to the country's Shi'ite minority.

Activists in the country have long called for greater rights for women. Ruled by an absolute monarchy supported by conservative Wahhabi clerics, Saudi Arabia is a conservative country where religious police patrol the streets to ensure public segregation between men and women.

A campaign this summer by women who broke Saudi law by driving on the kingdom's city streets prompted some arrests.

Brothers who borrowed from loan sharks found dead

IPOH: Two brothers, who had three months ago borrowed money from loan sharks for their mother's funeral, were found hanged to death Friday.

Hew Kong Chen, 43, and Hong Weh, 38, were hanging by the neck from the ceiling in the dining room of their rented home in Taman Badri Shah in Bukit Merah at noon.

Their brother, Kong Han, a welder, said they had to borrow money for their mother's funeral as they did not have much.

“Mother used to give them money when she was alive,” he said.

Kong Han said he left the house at about 11am and returned an hour later to find both his brothers dead.

Acting Ipoh OCPD Supt Ahmad Termizi Abdul Haq said police found no foul play in the incident.

China national kicked out of home by her ex-husband

PETALING JAYA: A China national ended up with a bruised heart and battered body after confronting her ex-husband who had divorced her secretly.

The 38-year-old, who only wanted to be known as Li, said she met the Malaysian man, who is a feng shui master, in 2005 when he was in China for business.

Li, who is from Fuzhou, said they fell in love and married two years later.

“He suggested we start a trading outlet in Malaysia together. He would handle the sales and I would source for supplies of precious stone carvings from China,” she revealed during a press conference with MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong at Wisma MCA yesterday.

Li did not suspect anything amiss until her then husband told her to extend her business trip to China, which usually takes three months, to 10 months.

“I had not heard from him since November last year, so I flew back on Aug 29 to look for him,” she said.

Li got the shock of her life when her ex- husband told her that she was no longer welcome because he had apparently divorced her in 2009.

“He demanded that I go back to China immediately and threatened to tear up my passport,” she said.

Physical proof: Li pointing to a bruise she sustained during a scuffle with her ex-husband.

After she refused to leave, he brought another woman to the house and tried to chase her out.

“When I refused, they forced me out of the house. I was also kicked repeatedly,” she said.

The following day, she tried to retrieve her belongings including the carvings, some of which she was helping other traders to sell in Malaysia.

“That was when he showed me a divorce certificate which was dated May 21, 2009.”

Li said she did not remember signing any divorce document but her ex-husband had asked her to sign a document once.

“He told me it was a paper to transfer some property to me and I signed it. I trusted him although I did not understand it,” said Li.

She is appealing to her ex-husband to return the goods as she has to answer to her trader friends.

Chong said he had handled 13 such cases this year.

“Malaysian men should be fair to these women. Some of the men are not responding to my calls to settle their affairs. The women just want an explanation,” he said. (thestar).

BEIJING - Seorang lelaki di China, Liu Xinying menunjukkan cara-cara memasang sendiri komputer tablet menyerupai gajet popular keluaran Apple, iPad tetapi melibatkan kos yang lebih murah.

Dalam klip video 20 minit di laman perkongsian video China, Youku, lelaki itu menunjukkan cara bagaimana untuk memasang komputer tablet mirip iPad itu dengan menggunakan beberapa peralatan komputer, sebuah skrin sentuh bersama sebuah sarung serta papan kekunci.

Pada penghujung klip video berkenaan yang berjudul DIY IPAD 3, Xinying menunjukkan komputer tablet berkenaan yang sudah siap dipasang.

Komputer tablet pasang sendiri itu agak tebal dan berfungsi seperti iPad tetapi ia dijana sistem operasi Windows keluaran Microsoft.

Berita mengenai kehebatan lelaki itu seterusnya tersebar di beberapa laman web luar negara dan laman teknologi China selain laman jaringan sosial tempatan, Weibo.

Apabila dihubungi, pemuda berusia 21 tahun dari wilayah Shandong, timur China itu berkata, sejak klip video itu disiarkan di Youku pada bulan lalu dia terpaksa menolak lebih 12 permintaan orang ramai yang mahukannya membuat komputer pasang siap tersebut.

"Saya membuat komputer pasang sendiri ini untuk keseronokan sahaja," kata Xinying yang bekerja di sebuah kedai komputer di bandar raya Jinan.

"Kos untuk membuat komputer ini bersamaan 2,000 yuan (RM933)," tambahnya.

Kos tersebut adalah jauh lebih murah berbanding versi iPad 2 termurah di China yang dijual pada harga sekitar 3,688 yuan (RM1,721) manakala model iPad 64 gigabit iaitu yang paling mahal di negara berkenaan pula berharga 5,288 yuan (RM2,467). - AFP

2011 England Riots

The 2011 England riots are ongoing events across England. Widespread public disturbances, including looting, arson attacks, burglary, robbery and some rioting, are ongoing in some cities and towns in England. The rioting began on 6 August 2011 in Tottenham, North London; other riots then occurred elsewhere in London and in some other areas of England. The events followed the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man, Mark Duggan, by officers of the Metropolitan Police Service.^[1][2][3][4]

A march by about 200 people in Tottenham became violent and descended into rioting. In the following days, disturbances occurred in other areas of the city, including Wood Green, Enfield Town, Ponders End and Brixton. Vandalism, arson, looting and violent disorder were also reported in several boroughs of London, extending as far south as Croydon. At least 111 police officers were injured. On 8 August 2011, rioting and looting occurred in Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, Bristol and Medway.^[5][6][7][8] More than 1,100 people have been arrested since the start of the disruption,^[9] and the Metropolitan Police have been authorised to use baton rounds and water cannon against rioters if deemed necessary.

In response to the incidents, the Prime Minister David Cameron, the Home Secretary Theresa May, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Leader of the Opposition Ed Miliband cut short their holidays to return to London. It was announced that Parliament would be recalled on 11 August to debate the situation,^[10] and an extra edition of BBC Question Time would take place later that day, to discuss the riots.[1

Pertukaran saham MAS-AirAsia wujudkan monopoli – Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Pertukaran saham di antara Malaysia Airlines (MAS) dan AirAsia membangkitkan kerisauan serius tentang penguasaan AirAsia dan kemungkinan berlaku monopoli ke atas industri penerbangan tanahair.

Ketua Umum KEADILAN, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim berkata, gabungan itu mungkin membawa kepada monopoli kerana ia membabitkan monopoli dan juga broker kuasa politik.

“Malah, penglibatan Pengerusi AirAsia, Tony Fernandes dan penamanya dalam lembaga pengarah MAS turut menimbulkan konflik kepentingan walaupun beliau memegang jawatan bukan eksekutif,” kata Anwar yang juga bekas Timbalan Perdana Menteri dan Menteri Kewangan.

Tony Fernandes dan syarikatnya, Tune Air Sdn Bhd semalam menukarkan 10 peratus kepentingan saham dalam AirAsia dengan 20.5 peratus saham dalam MAS.

Menurut Anwar, pertukaran saham itu amat jelas menyalahi peraturan urus tadbir korporat dan tidak patut dibiarkan berlaku.

Ia juga menimbulkan persoalan terhadap nasib program transformasi syarikat berkaitan kerajaan (GLC) yang dilancarkan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Razak dengan meriah menggunakan wang rakyat.

“Adakah kerajaan sekarang mengakui pemulihan MAS yang dikatakan berjaya sebelum ini adalah satu ‘pertunjukan’ semata-mata?

“Najib perlu dipertanggungjawabkan kerana mengelirukan rakyat tentang ini,” kata Anwar.

Urusniaga itu juga, kata Anwar, membangkitkan isu ketelusan kerana ia dilakukan dengan penuh kerahsiaan.

“Dalam hal ini, Suruhanjaya Sekuriti perlu menyiasat kemungkinan berlakunya urusniaga dalaman membabitkan saham kedua-dua entiti ini,” kata Anwar.

Dalam kenyataan sama, Anwar turut melahirkan kerisauannya tentang urusniaga itu yang akan menguntungkan pihak minoriti tetapi merugikan pihak majoriti.

“Saya risau urusniaga ini menguntungkan pihak minoriti dan mengorbankan pihak majoriti, iaitu pekerja MAS yang berkhidmat dengan penerbangan nasional kita dengan berdedikasi dan setia walau pun diberikan pilihan yang teruk dan tidak mendapat bonus selama bertahun-tahun,” kata Anwar.

'My family's been in business for 140 years, now we have nothing'

A family who watched their furniture business burn to the ground in an inferno today said the rioters had "destroyed" their lives.

House of Reeves in West Croydon, which had been in the family for five generations, was left a gutted ruin after a 100-strong mob set buildings alight.

Owner Trevor Reeves said: "Words fail me. It's just gone. It's five generations. My father is distraught at the moment. It's just mindless thuggery."

His brother Graham added: "Our lives are destroyed, it will probably be someone else next week. It's horrendous, 35 years I have been down here."

He said the business was established in 1867, but he now had "nothing", adding: "Everything is just gone, we have just got nothing left. I was in the Brixton riots but this is worse."

Firefighters in Croydon were still struggling to extinguish fires lit by rioters today which forced a woman to make a desperate leap from a burning building.

The woman was seen jumping to safety as her flat above a chemist in Church Street turned into an inferno last night.

She fell into the arms of two waiting fire officers below and is believed to be receiving treatment at St George's Hospital.

Scotland Yard has launched a manhunt to find the rioters responsible for destroying homes and businesses during last night's raids. Gangs of about 100, aged between 15 to 25, looted at will and set fire to buildings. Officers started collecting CCTV footage from Croydon council in the early hours of this morning.

Extra staff have been drafted by the council to collate and log hours of CCTV footage in a bid to identify the gangs of thugs who terrorised the community after coordinating their attacks using Twitter and BlackBerry messages. Residents evacuated from flats in London Road watched helplessly as all their possessions went up in flames. Firemen, who tried to put out the blaze, were initially pushed back by gangs of teenage thugs who pelted them with bricks.

The fire began after more than 100 youths, dressed in hoodies and with their faces covered descended on the Church Street area near West Croydon station at about 8pm. With no police in sight, they began by setting alight to a double-decker bus before attacking the nearby furniture store.

Violence spread to Thornton Heath and Norbury.

Residents and shopkeepers today told of fears that there would be further violence. Paul Buckmaster, 28, said: "What's to stop them coming back again? They haven't been shown by police that this isn't on. It could be in daylight next time. The fact that they are coming off the trains shows that they are moving round in a co-ordinated way contacting each other on the BlackBerrys.

"It's in the air. People are scared. The Army should be called in as the police can't handle it. Are there even enough police for this?" A 26-year-old man found by police with gunshot wounds in a car in Warrington Road was today in a serious condition in a south London hospital. Two others, believed to be in their late twenties, were arrested at the scene for handling stolen goods.

Scotland Yard said the victim was not a police officer and was not shot by police. The case is being investigated by Operation Trident. More than a dozen people have been arrested in Croydon so far.

Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell said: "I'm sickened to see this happening in my town. My first instinct is sympathy for the businesses and residents who have been directly affected by what's happened."

Mike Fisher, leader of Croydon council, said: "I am disgusted by the mindless hooliganism displayed by the criminal element that has come to Croydon."

The violence occurred as China's Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan on Monday

BEIJING – A day before the start of the holy fasting month for China's Muslims, at least 11 people were killed in a series of attacks in the north-western region of Xinjiang.

"There were cries and blood everywhere ... Terrified people flooded into our office to hide," Yang Hongmei, a female resident in Xinjaing, told the official Xinhua news agency.

At least eight people were killed when two attacks rocked the far-west city of Kashgar before two gunmen using knives went on assaulting residents.

"Our security guards tried to save the residents while our manager attempted to subdue an attacker by holding him, but the man had a knife and stabbed him in his abdomen," said Yang.

Three people, including a policeman, were also killed and 28 injured in an explosion in the same city.

The attacks came less than two weeks after 18 people were killed in an attack in the restive Xinjiang region.

The violence also comes as the Muslim minority in China is preparing to welcome the holy fasting month of Ramadan, which is set to start on Monday, August 1.

Xinjiang's capital, Urumqi, was the scene of deadly violence in July 2009 when the mainly Muslim Uighur minority vented resentment over Chinese restrictions in the region.

In the following days, mobs of angry Han took to the streets looking for revenge in the worst ethnic violence that China had seen in decades.

The unrest left nearly 200 dead and 1,700 injured, according to government figures. But Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking Muslim minority, say the toll was much higher and mainly from their community.

China’s authorities have convicted about 200 people, mostly Uighurs, over the riots and sentenced 26 of them to death.

Martial Laws

Exiled Uighur leaders say that the city has been placed under martial law with dozens of people arrested.

"The entire city of Kashgar is under martial law, and authorities have arrested at least 100 Uighurs," the German-based World Uyghur Congress said in a statement sent to Reuters.

"There is no way to protest peacefully the Chinese suppression there, and the policy of calculated resettlement," added group spokesman Dilxat Raxit, referring to ethnic Han Chinese being relocated to live in Xinjiang.

Xinjiang has been autonomous since 1955 but continues to be the subject of massive security crackdowns by Chinese authorities.

Rights groups accuse Chinese authorities of religious repression against Uighur Muslims, a Turkish-speaking minority of eight million, in Xinjiang in the name of counter terrorism.

Muslims accuses the government of settling millions of ethnic Han in their territory with the ultimate goal of obliterating its identity and culture.

And analysts say the policy of transferring Han Chinese to Xinjiang to consolidate Beijing's authority has increased the proportion of Han in the region from five percent in the 1940s to more than 40 percent now.

Beijing views the vast region of Xinjiang as an invaluable asset because of its crucial strategic location near Central Asia and its large oil and gas reserves.

No Ramadan for Uighur Muslims

As of Ramadan start, more severe restrictions were imposed on Chinese Muslims.

URUMQI – Amid fresh arrests, restrictions on fasting and prayers at mosques, Uighur Muslims are suffering under the latest episode of Chinese government crackdown on their ethnic minority in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.

“If any religious figure discusses Ramadan during the course of religious activities, or encourages people to take part, then they will lose their license to practice,” Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uighur Congress, told Eurasia Review on Friday, August 5.

“The more serious cases will result in arrests for incitement to engage in illegal religious activity,” he said.

No Fasting

Beijing slapped severe restrictions on Chinese Muslims as the holy fasting month of Ramadan started.

As for Muslim members of the government throughout Xinjiang, the government forced them to sign “letters of responsibility” promising to avoid fasting, evening prayers, or other religious activities.

“Fasting during Ramadan is a traditional ethnic custom, and they are allowed to do that,” an employee who answered the phone at a local government neighborhood committee office in the regional capital Urumqi said confirming the restrictions.

“But they aren’t allowed to hold any religious activities during Ramadan,” she added.

“Party members are not allowed to fast for Ramadan, and neither are civil servants.”

As for private companies, Uighur Muslim employees were offered lunches during fasting hours.

Anyone who refuses to eat could lose their annual bonus, or even their job, Raxit added.

Officials have also targeted Muslim schoolchildren, providing them with free lunches during the fasting period.

A Uighur resident of Beijing said students under 18 are forbidden from fasting during Ramadan. Moreover, government campaigns forced restaurants in the Muslim majority region to stay open all day.

More restrictions were also imposed on people trying to attend prayers at mosques.

Everyone attending prayers has to register with their national identity card, he added.

“They have to register,” he said.

“[After prayers] they aren’t allowed to [congregate and] talk to each other.”

In Ramadan, adult Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking and sex between dawn and sunset.

The sick and those traveling are exempt from fasting especially if it poses health risks.

Muslims dedicate their time during the holy month to be closer to Allah through prayers, self-restraint and good deeds.

URUMQI 7 Ogos - Bulan Ramadan kali ini tidak bermakna bagi masyarakat Islam Uighur di Urumqi, Xinjiang, barat laut China selepas kerajaan mengharamkan mereka menunaikan ibadah puasa, bersolat tarawih atau menjalankan sebarang aktiviti keagamaan.

Penganut Islam di Xinjiang dilarang daripada menunaikan ibadah tersebut selepas kerajaan memaksa mereka menandatangani satu 'dokumen' yang melarang mereka daripada berbuat demikian.

Larangan terbaru itu menekankan lagi layanan buruk kerajaan China terhadap penduduk minoriti Uighur yang sering berdepan tindakan keras pihak berkuasa sebelum ini dan dinafikan hak mereka.

Jurucakap Kongres Sedunia Uighur yang beribu pejabat di Munich, Dilxat Raxit berkata, syarikat-syarikat swasta di sini turut menyediakan makanan tengah hari buat pekerja beragama Islam dan mereka boleh kehilangan kerja atau bonus tahunan sekiranya enggan makan.

"Tokoh agama juga boleh kehilangan lesen menyampaikan ceramah sekiranya mereka mengadakan aktiviti keagamaan atau menyeru penganut Islam berhimpun bagi menjalankan kegiatan agama," katanya kepada agensi penerbitan dalam talian, Eurasia Review.

Jelasnya, pegawai turut menyasarkan golongan pelajar beragama Islam dengan menyediakan bekalan makanan semasa waktu rehat sepanjang bulan Ramadan.

Seorang penduduk Uighur yang enggan dikenali berkata, restoran-restoran di kawasan yang mempunyai ramai penduduk Islam juga diarah menjalankan perniagaan walaupun ketika hari siang.

"Orang ramai juga sukar memasuki masjid untuk bersembahyang. Mereka perlu menunjukkan kad pengenalan diri dan mendaftar jika ingin masuk ke masjid," katanya.
